Joey has been studying a book called the Anger Management Handbook with his Christian counselor. It is a secular book, but it has a lot of great things to say that line up with Scripture. Noel, the Yosts (for those who remember them), and I are doing a read along with Joey on this book.
I was pleasantly surprised that the author, W. Robert Nay, comes close to recommending an alcohol free existence since, as he says, we all react differently to alcohol and there is no way to be sure that we are not the person who will get in trouble after 1-2 drinks.
He says this: "Alcohol may disrupt normal brain function, weakening brain mechanisms that normally restrain impulsive behaviors. Thus when we drink alcohol, it may be harder to put the brakes on when we are provoked. When we are sober we can pause to rethink the situation and take steps to cope without acting out with intense anger."
I will review this book when we are finished (it will be a while).
To be clear, Joey does not have an alcohol problem (he would not even take Episcopal communion when we were there because it involved dipping the bread into a cup of wine). His issues exist, but are not alcohol related.
I always read with the idea that the material might help me, a familymember, a friend, or a friend with a struggling familymember.
