For those of us who have a hobby of reading, what are your favorite genres to read? And if you like historical fiction, like I do, which time periods are your favorites?
The reason I ask is that, as we older folks downsize, it would be nice to know how to rehome our books sometimes. And it is also fun to speak about favorite books at church when we chat there. This, of course, does not replace discussing Scripture any more than sharing about hunting, hiking, or going to see Christmas lights replaces the pre-eminence of God's Word.
I will add here a plug for donations to the school library if you have books approriate for teens or younger children.
Annnnnnd, my favorite historical fiction is set during the first century/Roman Empire/Christ's first advent or during Tudor England or during World War II. I have read so much about the Holocaust that even my Facebook ads are now books from Amazon about the Holocaust.
Historical, WW2 primarily, but also military aviation WW1 & WW2. The Cold War, the behind the scenes workings of the government during the 50’s and 60’s. The JFK assassination. Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun and to understand and correctly see the current world and the future, it’s very important to understand the past and history. Often times history repeats itself. The Bible! For me it always has to read first that day before I try to read a secular book, to ensure the main thing stays the main thing 😁. Currently reading a real interesting historical account called the Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz, loaned to me by a church member. Great insight and reminder how much more evil the former Soviet Union was in the past during WW2 and the evils of socialism that you hear so much about today in our country. A true personal account of a Polish officer who was told the soviets entered to protect the polish from the evil Germans, toted as being “Liberators” and then being falsely imprisoned by them to render him powerless in his own country and to keep him from being a threat. An amazing test of will, endurance and escape during the winter from a prisoner camp deep deep in the wilderness of Siberia. He kept the story to himself most of his life and was first approached by a reporter on a tip he had information regarding actual Sasquatch (Bigfoot) sightings during his journey. So far quite an amazing read and true story!
I like to read many different genres. My favorite is probably historical fiction as well. It would be hard to narrow it down to one time period. 😁
Hi Mary. My favorite genre is mystery/suspense. My favorite historical fiction is set in Victorian England.
