Who are our fellow soccer ("football" if you ask Noel) enthusiasts?
The World Cup started Sunday, just as church was getting out.
So far, Noel and I are watching our fourth match (we have that habit some older people develop of being early risers--it started at 5). Argentina vs. Saudi Arabia. Messi got a goal within the first 12 minutes!
I love that the Beautiful Game creates a lot of good will, worldwide, every four years. No matter what is on my mind, soccer tends to be a relaxing and fun diversion.
I had no choice. I married Noel in 1989 and, while we were living in Germany in 1990, Germany won the World Cup. Noel let me know we were a soccer family so I watched those first matches in German (I fell asleep on the couch a lot). Each subsequent World Cup, I have paid more and more attention.
Now I love it!
So when you think of soccer, think of me as a young bride, being kept awake an entire night in Germany by the young kids driving around our small town honking their horns the night they won the World Cup in 1990. Hope I just gave you a smile for Tuesday.
So this year a Martin Thanksgiving involves all day soccer instead of American football like many of yโall. Our different customs are fun. God brought us together from many diverse traditions and made us one local family of believers. I do not lightly dismiss what He has done for us at Tab! A kind of funny, kind of gross story. Uruguay is playing South Korea right now. The star Uruguayan player, Suarez, has a very strange reputation. He has bitten an opposing player in three matches of his career. Like a three year old! Noel, who takes breaks from the world of finance by googling unique things, says that that has been once every 284 matches he has played. We find ourselves wondering if this will be the match when he does it again . . . He immediately gets sent off with a red card but then does it again later! Noel also googled other famous biters in history and found there was an American basketball player named Tree who did that once in a game! Can you guess the Boston Globe headline the next day??? Tree bites man!
We will try to watch as many Brazil games as possible. Hope they can clench their sixth title this year. ๐
Iโm becoming more and more of a fan myself. Problem is who do I cheer for? ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ or ๐บ๐ธ Friday will pose a bit of a challenge for me! โฝ๏ธ๐ฅ ๐๏ธ
