“There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously - no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption.”
I love this Lewis quote. I also love the times that he reminds us that ten seconds after we die, we will love the Christian person for whom we now hold the most contempt more than we currently love the Christian person who is dearest to us. Our love for all of our brothers and sisters in Christ will increase so much when we cross over into eternity!!!
I have been listening to a few podcasts on the Imago Dei, the Image of God stamped in all of us. I have been reminded that is why we stand against abortion, the killing of the elderly, the killing of the disabled, and slavery. Historically, Christianity brought all of that. The philosophers of Ancient Greece believed some nations should be slaves to others. Children were (primitively) aborted or cast out on a hillside at birth. The elderly and the disabled, if they were poor, were left to die.
Only the coming of Christ changed that. He showed us all of us are made in God’s image originally and bought us back from sin.
At Joey’s special needs college, Shepherds College, their motto is “Created on purpose, for a purpose.” I love that!
Love it!
