Today we are in the Port of Souda Bay, Crete. These pics are from the city of Chania, pronounced ,Hanea. This town is made up of Armenian, Greek Othodox, Roman Catholic and Jewish. In 1941 Jews were advised to travel to Thessaloniki for safety. They traveled in a ship under a Nazii insignia. Unfortunately, the notice of this didn't reach the Allied troops and , I think, a out 800 Jews died from Allied strike on boat
3 families stayed hidden here in Chania hidden by friends and survived and have kept their community alive.
When the Turks won over the Knights 200 yr rule, the Turks gave the people of Rhodes the choice of leaving with a specified time-frame. The Knights took 6000 Rhodes and island's folks with them to Crete. There are only 3 % Islamic population here in Rhodes at this time.
This castle had explosives buried. It was hit by lightening and exploded. On front, you can see change in color of masonry. The below is all original, above was re- constructed by the Italians.
Because of Santorini being canceled, we stayed in Port at Rhodes until 1 PM , so we got to walk the town before sail. Glad we got to see a little more. Now on our way to Crete
