In Praise of Freedom!

On a very rainy morning in Concord, Massachusetts, we arrived to find the Minuteman National Park not only closed but its parking lots chained off.

There were two related houses, not part of the National Park, about a mile away so we decided to tour those.

Awaiting the opening of the first house, Noel asked a local man walking his dog whether it was possible to walk into the National Park somehow, as we had seen hikers in there.

The man said “Just cross the street here. There is a path right there and it is part of the National Park.”

We were blessed and delighted to find that that path was a five minute walk from the Old North Bridge where the “shot heard round the world” began the Revolutionary War. We have stood where it ended in Yorktown; now we have stood where it began.

Noel soberly said, as we looked at the tribute to the British soldiers who died, “We would have been on opposite sides of the bridge, Mary.”

(Try to enlarge the poems and read them. They are beautiful).
