Openings to Witness

On our trip to New England last week, I found a new way to introduce faith into a conversation with a stranger.

It started our first night in Branford, Connecticut at a college-type pizza parlor in the next town over from Yale University. Our waitress was running around solo and managing to keep everyone fed with a minimum of delay. She was probably 45-50 and looked Italian, although she told us she was not of the Italian family that had owned the place for decades.

When we were paying our bill, I told her I am a born again Christian and believe in telling people when they make a difference. I said she obviously did more there than just feed tummies. She liked that.

I said the same thing later in the week in Brattleboro, Vermont after we had eaten in just about the most romantic setting I have ever seen, on the second floor next to floor to ceiling windows looking down on the confluence of the Connecticut and the West Rivers. New Hampshire was across the river(s) from us. And again, the waitress, a Black woman from the Bronx, was serving almost the entire second floor single-handedly.

Neither woman pursued the conversation more, but I was glad to introduce the topic to these women, maybe to enter a process the Holy Spirit was starting in their lives. Speaking up for Jesus can only help . . .

Lovely pic! You'll know when you get to heaven whether you planted seeds or watered them. How exciting! Keep introducing your faith, and God will give the increase!
