I was sharing with a friend at church this week how easy it is for me (and probably for all of us) to be affected emotionally by images. 9/11 had a lot of them, one of them a billboard that I passed on the way to work the entire next summer. It was of a group of firefighters rushing up a staircase that ended . . . in heaven.
I loved that billboard until I thought about what it was saying. It was telling us that the firefighters who sacrificed their lives on 9/11 went straight to heaven.
If ever there were a human action that could purchase salvation, it might have been that one. The heroism of the firefighters and police officers who ran into the World Trade Center.
Only, we know that we cannot purchase our own salvation with any act, however righteous.
With brimming eyes and a sorrowing heart, I was pointed back, by a billboard, to the need to tell everyone that Jesus is the only way to the Father. Even good, moral people need to know!!!
I hope every one of the firefighters who died on 9/11 knew Jesus, but I fear the total was not 100%.
What's the old saying; "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
Thank you for the post and even heroic works still fall short.
