Bonneville Salt Flats

Has anyone who does not follow car racing heard of the Bonneville Salt Flats? We had not. Wish we had taken a picture but we did not see a good stopping place on I-80 for almost 100 miles as we gaped at these completely flat, ghostly white plains that began in Nevada and continued almost all the way to Salt Lake City, Utah. Apparently they are very related to the Great Salt Lake in Salt Lake City but they made me think of Lot and his family, especially his wife. Places on earth that have turned into salt.

I looked up the car racing part. There is a race on the Bonneville Flats once a year because they are one of very few places on earth that, when dry, offer a flat, obstacle free, speed limit free, legal place to drive as fast as you possibly can. I can definitely see the attraction. Apparently you can see the Great Salt Lake from I-80 also, but we exited as we neared Salt Lake City because we were in search of dinner and decided we had to try an In-n-Out Burger near our hotel. I think I may regret that decision and go back to see the lake another time!
