Alice’s Funeral

Noel and I were blessed by the sweet spirit of fellowship at Alice’s funeral and funeral meal last night.

Unlike the majority who attended, I did not get to know who Alice was until last night. And what I heard was wonderful and touching.

I had intended to visit Alice for two years. As some of you may do, I have a list of people to visit or spend time with:

  • church family

  • Christian friends from other times in my life

  • non Christians whom the Lord has laid on my heart to try to win

  • extended family and neighbors to whom I owe mutual care

And somehow, in two years, I never made it down my list to Alice.

But God knows all about that. He made sure the wonderful people who did make it to Alice’s side made her feel loved until the very end. He made sure that other people He has placed in my life were brought to my attention constantly, lest I become unbalanced because I love to read, too, and could easily stay home every Saturday after working all week . . ,

I think what I am seeing is that we, at Tab, are called to be there for each other. Not every person for every other person, but God will always work it out that the right people get there.

I am a firm believer that Ephesians 2:10 means not only that God saves us for a life of good works but also that He saves us for specific good works He has foreordained.

We can miss the boat. If we do, we miss a blessing. I will always wonder if I should have somehow added one sweet visit to Alice into my life.

But I also see how wonderfully God used Mary Jo, Gail, the ā€œit was our Thursdayā€ Hickoks, and so many others . . .

God bless you guys!

What a sweet post, Mary. I’m sure we must all confess that we have missed opportunities to visit. But I think Tabernacle was well represented with Alice. Pastor made sure she got a bulletin every week and she had weekly visits from Tabernacle. We tried to make sure she knew what was going on in the Tab family and Mary Jo was her advocate in every situation. I praise the Lord for being part of such a loving and caring church.
